Postpartum Tips from New Moms

  • Make your bedroom beautiful and functional so that you actually want to rest in there for a long time - plants, art, upgrade bed & bedding if you are able. A wedge pillow is nice for extra upright support in bed.

  • Set up a cart beside your bed to hold all of your postpartum essentials to limit getting up and walking around in the first weeks postpartum.

  • Put a large trashcan in your room so that the trash doesn’t pile up on the floor / to save you trips to your kitchen trash.

  • Accept help when it’s offered! Even if you feel like you can do it yourself, just say yes to the offering of help.

  • If someone asks what they can do for you, tell them it would be so helpful if they organized a meal train for you.

  • Eat nourishing foods but also know that postpartum is not the time to be on a diet. Consuming enough calories is crucial for breastmilk production so eat what you want!

  • Expect and allow the demands of newborn care to transform your heart into deeper service and compassion. Motherhood is a practice of selflessness and that’s so incredibly concentrated in the first 6 weeks of postpartum.

  • Don’t be afraid to take the space you need! For example, I wish my family would have given me more space in the early days of postpartum, sometimes I felt weird telling them to go even though I wanted them to leave.

  • Take it slow!! I made the mistake of walking around my backyard in my first week postpartum and I hurt for days.

  • Breastfeeding can be really hard but don’t give up because it is so worth it!!
