Look for the embers

When the night is long and the world feels cold,

look for the embers

gather your sticks and place them at the center

when the world feels heavy and death is at your doorstep,

go and build yourself a fire

throw on to it your hunger and watch it eat

feed it your darkness,

your desperation and well-worn longing

and when the flames have eaten all that you have left to give

look for the embers,

glowing at dawn
